Description
The coast from the Gulf of Fethiye to Bodrum remains largely undeveloped and has some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in all Turkey. Towering cliffs, a shoreline indented with countless inlets and thick forests still inhibit land communication and some of the smaller coastal sites, even today, are still only accessible by boat. In antiquity, virtually all communication on the Carian coast was by sea. Cities grew up round safe harbours and public buildings that were meant to be seen were constructed on terraces in order to impress new arrivals. Places like Kaunos and Knidos can only properly be appreciated if they are approached from the sea. These short tours will take you to sites which are still amongst our favourites. They are ideal for first-timers, but recent excavations at Kaunos and Knidos also make them attractive propositions for our more seasoned travellers. Overnight stops are all in bays where the swimming is superb. Matthew or James will show you how and why these coastal communities developed and will put them into historical context.
