Description
The 'Split Link' structure is an advanced horticultural polyhouse from Northern Polytunnels designed to meet the requirements of the new European standards soon to be implemented for glass and polythene structures.
These types of structures are in use on the continent, and with the addition of high sides we are pushing the limit of polytunnel technology into the next generation. With straight sides between 3 and 4 metres high and a ridge height of 6 metres, the heat build up is far less than conventional structures. This, combined with automated roof ventilation and side roll up curtains, makes a much more versatile structure, adaptable to glasshouse compatibility using benching and machinery.
The fundamental difference between continental structures and our 'Split Link' is the ease of construction and tensioning facility allowing the sheet to be fully tensioned. This we feel is a very important facility.
The hoops are assembled at ground level and raised to just below the gutter when ready for sheeting. Once the sheeting is completed, the hoops are raised to their full height enabling the sheet to be tensioned adequately. Continental structures rely on the elasticity of the sheet and grip strip to achieve the correct tension.
By restricting the movement of the polythene and the use of box section legs, this structure is a far cry from the poor reputation that polytunnels tended to have with the glass house growers.
