The ancient cities of Caria and Lycia are situated on or near the coast, so travelling by boat is by far best way of seeing them. The tour starts in Bodrum with a short visit to the Mausoleum of Mausolos at Halikarnassos (one of the Seven Wonders) and ends with a short journey high into the Taurus to Arykanda, one of the most breathtaking sites in all of southern Turkey. Carian and Lycian cities, cut off from the rest of the world by high mountains, often enjoyed quasi-independence and the result is frequently a fusion of local and imported cultures. A Roman theatre with a backdrop of Lycian tombs is a common feature. John is a frequent visitor to this part of Turkey and his academic background and interests make him well qualified to guide you through the sometimes complex history and culture of the area. The coastal scenery is the most dramatic in Turkey and it is unspoilt. Almost every night is spent in quiet bays and the swimming in pristine waters is excellent.
