Description
19th century oil painting on canvas of a flock of sheep being watched by the shepherd and shepherdess. The backdrop is a wooded forest and the sheep are in the forefront. The painting is signed C.Jacques in bottom right hand corner and is in its original gilt wood frame. The frame shows some signs of restoration, although is in good condition overall. The artist, Charles Emile Jacques was born in France in 1813 and died in 1894, he was noted for his paintings of animals, espcially farm animals. Jacques was part of the Barbizan school, a movement of painters named after the village of Barbizan near Fontainebleau forest, France. The Barbizan painters were a movement towards realism in art that arose in the context of the dominant romantic movement of the time. Jacques himself received a 'Legion of Honour' (L‚gion d'honneur) in 1867, Frances highest order of merit for civilians. The back of the canvas has the stencil mark "P.Briautt 2 Rue du Louvre, Paris" the name of the canvas supplier.
